Restoring our reclaimed floor

I know that I am very late with the interiors posts, but hey...better late than never! Let me tell you about one of the features I most like in our home, the floor. Fortunately, after some TLC, we were able to maintain the original flooring which is more than a century old and this how we did.

Eu bem sei que ando muito atrasada com os posts de decoração, mas hey…mais vale tarde do que nunca! Hoje venho falar-vos de um dos apontamentos de que mais gosto na nossa casa, o chão. Felizmente, depois de alguma manutenção, foi nos possível manter o soalho original que já conta com mais de cem anos, ora vejam.

After the chimney breasts were removed and the painting was all done, the floor was left in a state. The dust from the works had impregnated in the cracks of the wood and we were not managing to get it clean. Furthermore, on the wall where the chimney breast was removed, the floor slats placed were not, for obvious reasons, of the same type and the differences between the old and new floors were too evident.

Depois de removidas as chaminés e feitas as pinturas ficámos com o chão numa lástima. A poeira das obras impregnou-se nas fissuras da madeira e não conseguimos limpá-la de maneira nenhuma. Para além disso, na parede onde foi removida a chaminé, o chão colocado não é, por razões óbvias, do mesmo tipo e as diferenças entre o antigo e o novo eram demasiado evidentes.

Given the condition of the wood, we decided that the best option would be to sand and paint the floor to make it all uniform. Ideally, you should do these repairs when the area is still empty and stripped of furniture. The process releases a lot of dust so it's really important to cover everything up.

Visto o estado da madeira decidimos então que a melhor opção seria lixar e pintar de modo a uniformizar todo o chão. Convém fazer este tipo de reparos quando a área ainda está vazia e despida de mobília. Este processo liberta muita poeira por isso é mesmo importante cobrir tudo aquilo que não se pode sujar.

Is it possible to carry out this type of repairs without resorting to professional help? Of course. Rent a floor sander, stock up on patience and get it done. But let's get real, it's a messy, boring and the last thing you want to be doing after a long week at work.

Bearing in mind that we had just painted the whole house, we decided to turn to a professional, Will, which was a lot more precise than us and avoided damaging our freshly painted skirting boards. Between sanding, painting, drying and repainting, the whole thing got done in a weekend.

É possível fazer este tipo de reparos sem recorrer a ajuda profissional? É. Aluga-se uma lixadora, toma-se uma dose extra de paciência e faz-se. Mas vamos lá ser honestos, é um processo chato, sujo e a última coisa que se quer fazer depois de uma longa semana de trabalho.

Tendo em conta que tínhamos acabado de pintar a casa toda, recorremos a um profissional, o Will, que graças à sua precisão evitou danificar os nossos rodapés novinhos em folha. Entre lixar, pintar, secar e voltar a pintar a coisa ficou feita num fim-de-semana.

Before starting his work, Will sanded a bit of the floor and did a little patch test with different stains so that we could choose the shade we liked the most. We opted for a walnut stain that matches the moody, yet cosy, environment which we decided to go for in the living room.

Antes de iniciar o seu trabalho o Will lixou um bocadinho de chão e experimentou vários vernizes diferentes para que pudéssemos escolher o tom de que mais gostávamos. Optámos pelo nogueira que vai ao encontro do ambiente escuro, mas ainda assim acolhedor, que decidimos dar à sala.

Thanks to the dark stain we went for, the difference between the old and the new floorboards is not visible anymore. But we did manage to preserve a lot of the little flaws that give character to our floor.

When we started the renovations, we suffered a little when hiring the wrong people, so whenever I meet someone I trust, I make a point of sharing their contact because I know the difference an efficient professional makes. Will was meticulously perfect with his job and managed to control much of the dust, which is actually the most annoying part of this process. I would not dare to do this on my own, it’s clear this is specialist work. Will will certainly come back to do a lot more in our home. In fact, as I’m writing this, I’m trying to convince Martin that we need some bespoke cabinets done in our hallway. More space for shoes, you see.

Graças ao tom que escolhemos não se consegue perceber a diferença entre o chão antigo e o novo. E no geral, apesar de o termos uniformizado, continua a ter imensos buraquinhos e falhas que lhe dão o ar tosco que nós tanto queríamos preservar.

Quando iniciámos a jornada das remodelações sofremos um bocadinho ao contratar as pessoas erradas por isso, sempre que eu encontro alguém de confiança, faço questão em partilhar o contacto porque sei a diferença que faz um profissional eficiente. O Will desempenhou este trabalho minucioso na perfeição e conseguiu controlar grande parte da poeira que, na verdade, é a consequência mais chata deste processo. Eu já mais me atreveria a fazer isto sozinha, o Will facilitou-nos muito o processo e vai voltar cá a casa certamente para fazer muitas mais coisas. Aliás, ando a tentar convencer o Martin de que precisamos de um armário feito à medida para o corredor. Lá está, mais espaço para sapatos.
